What is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behavioral Analysis is an evolving science dedicated to adapting and advancing the skills and growth of individuals of all needs and ages. With a focus in neurodivergent disorders (ASD/Sensory/ADHD/ect…), ABA uses an evidence-based approach that is focused on enhancing lives. It allows us to take a deep dive into the way people think, learn, behave, and adapt to their environments. For those who receive ABA therapy, it can be a marvelous way to open new doors and learn to advocate for themselves. It also provides them new methods of response where in the past they may have only had intensive behaviors at their disposal.

Our approach at Moore than Behavior takes ABA therapy and adapts it to you! We like to joke around and say, “we are not your grandma’s ABA.” What that means to us is that we want to take the old methods of ABA, where focus on the ‘strange/weird’ could get in the way of true development. We are not here to stop stims, to create robots meant for showing off in public, or to create tricks that aren’t useful. We want to truly and meaningfully develop a set of skills that assist everyone in coping, advocating, and growing in a world that can be undeniably stressful.

What are the benefits?

  • Understand Socially Appropriate Needs: We want to give everyone the opportunity to be themselves, but there are things every child needs to know to adjust to the world around them.
  • Skill Development: We aid in development and growth of all developmental skills including communication, social, emotional regulation…
  • Adaptability: Provides useful strategies that assist in adapting more comfortably to surroundings and everyday obstacles.
  • New Methods of Communication: We teach methods of new responses that aim at replacing socially inappropriate behaviors (aggression, property destruction, tantrums, elopement, ect…). Our focus is on giving new forms of response, not punishing the old ones.
  • Social/Relationship Growth: we provide opportunities to engage, interact, and learn alongside others.

Why ABA?

  • ABA is customized to your needs.
  • ABA adapts to you, not you to ABA.
  • Duration of sessions are based on your needs.
  • A focus on your skills, behaviors, wants, and needs is always provided.

What are some components of a Moore than Behavior ABA session:

  • Naturalistic therapy: we allow the child to lead and teach them in their preferred areas, no one is forced to stay in a seat or learn at a table.
  • Meals: these opportunities assist in development of routines, acceptance of others, and food related skills.
  • Potty Training: we ensure comfort at all times and encourage, without force, everyone to develop bathroom related skills.
  • Social Play: is a time to focus on social skills that affect the learner and others within the environment (e.g., sharing, co-play, acceptance of others).
  • Play: allows for everyone to choose their own adventure without the constraints of someone else guiding them.
  • Motor Activities: ensuring movement helps the brain grow and the body develop new skills
  • Skill Building: throughout the entirety of the session, someone will be there to promote, encourage, and support the development of new skills.
  • Emotional Regulation: when things get a little tough, we will assist in development of new and easy to use methods of calming down, adapting response, and communicating wants/needs in a productive manner.
